Our Year 10 Childcare girls recently participated in the Medicare Local "Baby Think It Over" program, designed to prevent teenage pregnancy. Each girl was handed a virtual baby for two days and nights to gain experience in looking after a child.
The babies were programmed to cry at intervals just like a real baby, with the girls having to figure out what the baby needs - feeding, nappy changes, burping or just a cuddle.
However, as we all know real babies cry several times a night and many of the girls turned up to school looking a little worse for wear after having little sleep. The program was a great success with most of the girls stating that they didn't wish to have a baby in a hurry!
In addition, as part of the program some real-life teenage mums visited the school to chat to the girls and share their experiences.
Many thanks to Christina Self from Medicare Local who came and organised the babies for the girls, as well as all the staff who gave up their time to help run the program. All the girls did a fantastic job with their babies, learned a great deal and behaved themselves admirably. We would like to thank them for being superb ambassadors for the school and we look forward to running the program next year.
