Clarkson Community High School's science and mathematics students have scored some outstanding marks in state and national competitions in recent months.
Alexander Simpson (13) achieved a high distinction for finishng in the top one per cent of contestants in the national Rio Tinto Big Science Competition run in May
Of 58 Clarkson CHS students from Years 8, 9 and 10 who contested the challenge, eight were in the top 10 per cent (distinction) and many others were in the top 20 per cent.
"All students completed a very challenging paper which referred to all areas of science, with a focus on problem solving and investigative skills," said the school's applied science co-ordinator Lisa Jankowski.
Clarkson CHS also emerged with honours from the WA Mathematics Association's annual Games Camp in June.
The school entered three teams from Years 9 and 10 and they were up against 35 teams of the best mathematics brains of government and private high schools from around the state.
One of Clarkson's teams made up of Aaron Parnaby, Stephan Marks, Brendan Tindall and Jordan Bradford finished fifth and Aaron, Brendan, and Jordan achieved individual recognition for scoring highest number of points in events.
In the Annual Australian Mathematics Competition in July, three Clarkson CHS students, Adrick Wellman, Scott Lawrence and Alexander Simpson received certificates of distinction.
In the Trans-Tasman Challenge - an online competition between Australia and New Zealand held in July - Clarkson finished third top school from WA.
